[DICKENS, CHARLES.]

4 albumen print cartes-de-visite, each 2 ½ by 4 inches, being studio portraits of Dickens in ¾ portrait and profile, 3 with imprint of J.Gurney & Son, one with imprint of John & Charles Watkins, some fading and abrasions to the Watkins image, minor spotting to the rest.

The profile of Dickens with the imprint of John & Charles Watkins was likely taken in September of 1863, though the exact image does not appear among the National Portrait Gallery’s digitized collection. The other three images were taken by the New York studio of J. Gurney and Son during Dickens’ second tour of America in 1867.
