Système des contradictions économiques ou philosophie de la misère. Paris: Guillaumin, 1846. 2 volumes. [4], XLIII, [1], 435, [1]; [4], 531, [1] pp. 8vo (211 x 130 mm). Later green morocco over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. Faint foxing, predominately to preliminary and final leaves, second volume with light dampstain in top margin, covers with rubbing around extremities, first volume with upper joint partially cracked.

First edition. Proudhon, most known for his statement, “Property is theft,” was among the first anarchist thinkers and was a friend of Karl Marx for a time, until the latter wrote a critical response to the above work entitled The Poverty of Philosophy.
