Half-title in vol 1. xxxii, 323, [1 errata], [4 Approbation and Privilege]; [2], xliv, [2], 306 pp. Engraved frontispieces, 16 folding plates and 5 folding leaves of printed music (one printed in red and black). 8vo (166 x 96 mm). Contemporary calf binding. A little dampstain in vol 1 at beginning and to a few plates, a few leaves worn at lower edges, scattered toning, text block cracked once in vol 2; hinges repaired.

First edition of Fournier's celebrated work. "The first successful endeavour to place the measurements of types on a rational basis" (Updike). With over 300 specimen leaves, including exotic type faces and ornaments. Bigmore & Wyman, p 228; Updike, Printing Types, I, p 260ff.
