BEWICK, THOMAS. 1753-1828.
Collection of 34 original wood-blocks cut and used by Thomas Bewick, various sizes, approximately 2 x 3 inches to 1 ¼ to ¾ inches, a few blocks with wear, though generally in excellent, usable condition.
An interesting collection of wood-blocks from the master of the wood engraving. “Chief among his innovations was a new conception of the black and white picture. He did not think of it as white space on which black outlines and solids made a linear design printed in relief … Instead he began with a black void out of which the subject appears in a varying range of grey tones with pure white for the lightest parts (James p 18).” The subjects of the blocks include numerous quadrupeds and birds including a particularly cut of a pair of peacocks, as well as decoration and seals. James. English Book Illustration 1800-1900.
Provenance: Catalogue slip from Dawson’s Book Shop in Los Angeles, 1930s.
