The Art-Journal, was the most important Victorian art journal. George Virtue bought the periodical in 1848 when it was called The Art-Union and promptly changed its name. Besides its historical importance, there are numerous illustrations of interest such as the Talbotype mentioned above, an early use of a photographic print as an illustration, and original etchings by Joseph Pennell and James A. McNeil Whistler.
