Adenographia: sive, glandularum totius corporis descriptio. London: By J.G. for the Author, 1656. [16], 287 pp. With four tipped-in engraved plates cut from one sheet. 8vo (161 x 101 mm). Early full vellum with remnants of paper spine label. First plate detached and with a slight loss and paper repair, minor bowing and soiling to covers.

First edition of the major 17th-century work on glands. "In Adenographia Wharton gave the first thorough account of the glands of the human body, distinguishing them from viscera and classifying them as either excretory, reductive, or nutrient. He provided a valuable description of the adrenal glands and the first adequate account of the thyroid gland, to which he gave its present name" (Norman).
