MINOT, GEORGE R. 1885-1950.

2 Autograph Letters, one Initialed (“G.R.M.”), 8 pp recto and verso, 8vo, Brookline, MA, December 13 and December 22, 1930, to William P. Murphy, regarding the events surrounding the joint awarding of the Popular Science Monthly Gold Medal and Annual Award for 1930 to Minot and George Whipple, leaves age-toned and thumbed; with 2 Typed Letters, one Initialed (“G.R.M.”), 4 pp recto and verso, 4to, n.p., December 17, and December 22, 1930, later letter a draft of the ALS of same date above, both with annotations in Minot’s hand, December 17 letter heavily creased and soiled, both leaves age toned and thumbed. With Autograph Letter Initialed (“W.P.M.”) of William P. Murphy, 1 p, 4to, n.p., December 16, 1930, to Minot, protesting that Whipple, and not himself, is co-nominated for the Popular Science award, leaf moderately creased and toned with some cuts at upper and lower margins.

An interesting group of correspondence relating to a $10,000 Popular Science award for “the achievement in Science of greatest value to the public" to Minot and to George K. Whipple, both of whom were researching the treatment of anemia, though independently of each other. In this correspondence to his research partner William P. Murphy, Minot announces the award, apologizes for the oversight of Murphy, and promises both to acknowledge Murphy’s contribution at the dinner and share the prize money. Murphy’s letter, however, indicates that he is still outraged at the oversight. The three men would go on to share the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1934 for their combined efforts to find a cure for pernicious anemia. Lot also includes:
MITCHELL, SILAS WEIR. Autograph Letter Signed (“Weir Mitchell”), 2 pp, 8vo (conjoining leaves), Philadelphia, November 30, n.y., to Louisa Minot, regarding the gift of a rare book, mild age toning to leaves.
Provenance: From the library of Nobel Laureate George R. Minot.
