The Moon Hoax; or A Discovery that the Moon Has a Vast Population of Human Beings. New York: William Gowans, 1859. 8vo. Original printed wraps. Moderate age-toning; upper cover soiled, creased at upper right corner, detached but present.
First edition. Together with Autograph Letter Signed (“Richd A. Locke”), 2 pp recto and verso, 8vo, Staten Island, November 11, 1852, to Edwards Lester, regarding his current project, light creasing, mounting remnants to left margin verso. A reprint of Locke’s successful hoax first printed anonymously in 1835 in the New York Sun. Perhaps intending to satirize a series of recent outrageous scientific hypotheses in the field of astronomy, Locke composed a series of articles in which he claimed that colonies of men and animals could be seen on the surface of the moon.
