JOHNSTONE, WILLIAM & ALEXANDER CROALL.

The Nature-Printed British Sea-Weeds. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1859-1860. 4 volumes. With 220 "nature-printed" plates of variously colored sea-weeds. Half-titles in all volumes with nature-printed vignettes. 8vo (240 x 156 mm). Original green cloth gilt, deckle-edges preserved. Fine, in bright and square original cloth.

First edition. An unusually fine copy of this unusual work. The nature-printing technique was perfected by Louis Auer in Vienna and brought to Britain by Henry Bradbury. Plants specimens were directly impressed into soft lead and an electrotype was made of the resulting impression.
