Atlas universel. Paris: For the authors and Boudet, 1757-[1758]. Folio (526 x 416 mm). [2 advertisement], 40 pp plus 108 double-page engraved maps, hand-colored in outline. Later full calf stamped in blind. Title-page with old re-hinging and a light stain, about one quarter of the maps with some marginal dampstain occasionally encroaching into image, mostly quite pale but maps of Egypt and of the Rhine area more heavily dampstained, a very few with center creases, joints cracked, modest wear to binding edges, some repair to joints and spine ends.

Second edition of this important and influential 18th century atlas. Includes the 5 additional maps of the post roads supplementing the 103 maps listed in the index. Of the regular series, 12 maps are of the ancient world and the rest depict modern geography, including a world map, a lovely separate map of Japan and 7 maps of the Americas. The map of Virginia and Maryland is based on Fry and Jefferson's map, the maps of Canada and South America are based on material held by the Depot de la Marine. Phillips, Atlases, 619; Sabin 71863.
