Early full brown calf, rebacked, gilt-lettered burgundy leather spine label. One leaf misbound in front matter, plates mounted, toning and light foxing throughout, some dampstains, period marginalia, covers worn, joints rubbed.

First edition. Howell was Historiographer Royal to Charles II. Frontispiece portrait in the fifth state as called for in Pforzheimer. BMC 12.755.921; Pforzheimer 515.
