VAN VEEN, OTTO. C. 1556-1629.

Quinti Horatii Flacci emblemata. Brussels: Francisco Foppens, 1683. [3], A-Y4, Z3, Aa-Cc4. Illustrated with engraved portrait of Vaenius and 104 (of 105) engraved plates by Vaenius, 2 of which are folding. 4to (282 x 229 mm). Period full vellum, spine lettered in ink. Wanting Z1, one leaf with tiny hole, generally internally clean, covers bowed and soiled.

Dutch painter, draughtsman, and humanist (he is often known as Otto Vaenius) Otto van Veen was a teacher to and influential figure in the life of Peter Paul Rubens. Van Veen’s engravings for this and other emblem books clearly show his deft skill.
