Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1939. A simple sheath made of light brown wool with a matching coat-dress worn by an unknown actress in the film that starred Jeanette MacDonald and Lew Ayres; an inside label reads "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer / No. 1074-4425;" a paper tag safety-pinned to the garment reads "From 'Broadway Serenade.'

The current owner bought this outfit at the now-famous 1970 MGM auction during the last days of the sale when thousands of costume pieces were being sold from bins for just dollars, as a vintage price tag reading "$5.00 DW" [David Weiss, the auctioneer] notes.
