Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1940. An elaborate outfit made of black velvet decorated with silver-colored piping, beads, sequins, tassels, and epaulets worn by the actress as she portrayed Clare Bennett in the film that also starred Fred Astaire. (Please note this piece is now in fragile condition to age and wear.)

PROVENANCE:
The current owner bought this outfit at the now-famous 1970 MGM auction during the last days of the sale when thousands of costume pieces were being sold from bins for just dollars as a vintage price tag reading "$5.00 DW" [David Weiss, the auctioneer] notes.
