A prop oil painting from the Laurel & Hardy film "A Chump at Oxford"

Hal Roach Studios, Inc./United Artists, 1940. Rendered on canvas and still in its original wooden frame, work depicts a portrait of the stern-looking Dean Williams [as portrayed by character actor Wilfred Lucas] wearing a black academic gown and mortar cap, set against a reddish background; a lever on the back allows the portrait's eyes to disappear so someone's real eyes can look through them. Seen in the funny 'dean's bedroom' scene when Stan points to the painting and asks "Say Ollie, I wonder who that old buzzard is over there?," the two then proceed to squirt "fizz water" on the portrait until the real Dean stands in front of it, only to get water in the face - zaniness ensues. Interestingly, this same painting also turns up in the 1948 United Artists release, "Who Killed Doc Robin?" Included are two VHS cassettes of both films as well as paperwork related to the painting.
Framed: 46 x 35in
