Footnotes
Note:
On January 6 1881, the barque Indian Chief was wrecked at the mouth of the Thames. The lifeboat Bradford was towed to the scene by the tugboat Vulcan and under stormy conditions was able to rescue members of the crew. William Broome was a resident of Ramsgate at the time and must have found the heroic episode inspiring since he painted it on several occasions.
