Footnotes
Note:
Built in Bath, England in 1833 and launched January 8, 1834, the 'New England' sailed as a packet ship between Boston and Savannah and possibly Natchez, New Orleans and Havana. The two pictures in the lot were almost certainly among others that were commissioned by the master of the ship, Captain Samuel Swanton, for his family back home. The present two watercolors were given to Sarah Elizabeth Swanton, who was the great-great grandmother of the current owner.
