Footnotes
Provenance:
By descent through the family of Friedrich Philip Rosenstiel
Note:
This still life was painted as a 'sign of admiration' for Friedrich Philip Rosenstiel (1754-1832) on the occasion of his jubilee, by students of Die Königin-Luise-Stiftung, Berlin, established in 1810 as a school for the education of women. A pencil study of the work contains a key that carefully notes which artist painted each flower as well as the leaves of the foliage.
Friedrich Philip Rosenstiel was a member of the Prussian civil service and was appointed Privy Councillor for Finance in 1804 and Councillor of State in 1810. He was also affiliated with the Königliche Prozellan-Manufaktur (KPM), the distinguished Berlin porcelain factory, for fifty years, serving as director for many of those years.
A framed pencil study of the painting which includes the names of the artists, a framed commemorative document, and a medal struck in Rosenstiel's honor, dated 5 February 1828, are included in this lot.
