After a childhood spent moving accross the American West John Gutzon Borglum's family ended up in Los Angeles where Borglum became an apprentice to a lithographer. He then trained as a painter in San Francisco and later studied sculpture in Paris under Antonin Mercié at the Académie Julian where he would be strongly influenced by Auguste Rodin.
In 1893, Borglum spent a year travelling in Spain where he probably found the motif for the present model which was exhibited at the Salon National des Beaux-Arts in 1897, no.8.
