signed A. Mercié and inscribed F. Barbedienne Fondeur Paris, with pastille réduction mécanique Collas, numbered 65, dark brown patina, 51cmcm wide, 47cm deep, 93cm high (20in wide, 18.5in deep, 36.5in high)

Footnotes

The plaster of this model was exhibited at the Salon in 1874 and was a real success. The sculpture shows heroism and patriotic feelings after the disaster of the French defeat in 1870.
