Footnotes
Barre was a French sculptor and medallist who received his principal training from his father. He specialised in portrait sculpture and exhibited at the Salon from 1831 to 1886. He was one of the first sculptors to produce miniature portraits of his contemporaries in a variety of medium for mass production.
Barre has depicted Elssler in the role she was best known for the Cachucha in the ballet Le Diable boiteux. It has been suggested the production of this sculpture was prompted by a serious illness Elssler suffered during the winter of 1836. Both sculptor and model received much praise: 'One of the most successful attempts to have been made in miniature sculpture has been inspired by the loveliest of all ballerinas who have ever trodden the boards of the Opera'. (Theophile Gautier, La Charte de 1830, 1836).
