Founded in 1830, the firm of Ferdinand Barbedienne was one of the most important Paris art foundries. Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) was awarded the médaille d'honneur in 1855 at the Paris Exposition Universelle. He was also known for the invention of a machine, in collaboration with Achille Collas, which was capable of reducing sculptural works by mathematical calculation.
The model for this bronze must be the antique Greek sculpture in the Archeological Museum of Naples also called 'Mercury resting' wich was one of the most celebrated work of art discovered at Herculanum and Pompeii in the eighteenth century.
