A rare and unusual George III oak and mahogany cased 8-day brass dial longcase clock with moon phase, rocking ship and centre calendar sweep, in a named case

Samuel Heywood, Northwich, circa 1785
Having a 14-inch broken-arched dial, the silvered chapter ring having Roman hours, Arabic minutes and unusual outer terrestrial calendar sweep, framing a subsidiary seconds dial, engraved foliate scrollwork, and maker's name "Heywood/Northwich", within rococo-style cast foliate spandrels, the arch inset with an unsually small (3.5-inch wide) rolling moon with outer calendar scale framing starry skies over hemispheres, in turn above a rocking ship, inset within a seascape of tall-masted ships, the movement rack-striking on a bell, the case (lacking roof planks) having a swan-neck pediment flanking a recessed panel inscribed "S. MASON/Cabinet-maker/WEAVERHAM", over simulated verre eglomise frieze, the moulded hood door between fluted Corinthian columns, the crossbanded long trunk door between fluted quadrant columns on a panelled canted base 216cm high (sold with pendulum)
