Footnotes
This painting was exhibited at The British Institution, Suffolk Street, London, in 1831, with the title 'The Stingy Traveller'. The picture was engraved by J Brown, published in 1845, with the title 'The Stingy Traveller'. There are some minor differences between the composition in this painting and in the engraving. Mr Michael Buss has suggested that the portly figure in the doorway may be the artist's father, William Church Buss.
We are grateful to Mr Michael Buss for his assistance.
