THE LIVERPOOL TRADE CUP, AINTREE MEETING 1833: A George IV silver gilt two handled cup and cover

The circular bowl chased with a band of water leaves beneath an applied floral band, with a chased leaf rim, applied rampant horse on acanthus leaf handles, raised on a domed circular foot, the pull off cover with a basket of fruit and flowers finial., height 42cm, length across the handles 55cm, weight 216oz.

Together with the original steel bound oak traveling case and padlock.

The cup was originally commissioned by Phillip Bright of Doncaster, as the 1825 Doncaster Cup. It weighed 225.5oz and stood on a pedestal of 121.16oz, costing £350. It was subsequently sold to Messrs Braithwaite & Jones of Cockspur Street, London where the inscription was removed and replaced with the current one.

The 1825 Doncaster Cup was won by Lottery, a 5 year old, owned and mismanaged by Thomas Whitaker of Dowsthorpe Hall in Yorkshire. He won 11 races but is better known as a sire of steeplechasers, notably his son Lottery, who as a 10 year old won the 1st Grand National at Aintree in 1839, ridden by Jem Mason.

The Liverpool Trade Cup was first run in 1828 and continued in various forms until 1950 (as the Summer Cup). This cup was raced over on the 2nd July 1833, as a flat race over 2 miles with a purse of 800 sovereigns, being won by the 9-4 favourite Chancellor, a 5 year old bay, who carried 8st 8lbs, breed by Mr R Bower, ridden by G.Edwards, owned by Lord Wilton.

Chancellor was born in 1828 and first raced as a three year old, winning four races and being unplaced in the St.Leger. In 1832 he ran twice and was unplaced, in 1833 in addition to the Aintree Cup, he also won the Gold Cup at Heaton Park, which he again won in 1834.

Lord Wilton was Thomas Egerton (1799-1882), 2nd Earl of Wilton, born Grosvenor. He was the 2nd son of Robert Grosvenor, the 1st Marquees of Westminster and his wife Lady Eleanor Egerton, daughter of Thomas Egerton, the 1st Earl of Wilton.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
