A Japanese hanging scroll

Colour on paper, depicting Taira no Kiyomori dancing with a fan in his hand before a setting sun, accompanied by two geisha in kimono. 179cm x 55cm.

Footnotes

Taira no Kiyomori (1118-1181) was a general of the late Heian period of Japan. Here he is depicted at Kumano where he went to pray for his success against the Minamoto clan to take control of Japan during the Genpei War (1180-1185).

Taira no Kiyomori is the main character in the Japanese epic, the Tale of Heike, an account of the struggle between the Taira and Minamoto clans. It is considered one of the great classics of medieval Japanese literature and has provided material for many later artistic works, including woodblock prints and hanging scrolls.
