A Japanese wood study of Okame

Meiji Period
The female figure carved seated and clothed in flowing robes, holding a fan in her left hand, with full cheeks and smiling face, 5.5cm high, signed, together with a carved model of a recumbent deer, its head raised slightly into the air, 12cm long, 9.5cm high, signed. (2)

Footnotes

Okame, also known as Uzume or Otafuku, is the name for the female half of a traditional Japanese Kyogen theatre pair. She is considered to be the goddess of mirth and is frequently seen in Japanese art with full rosy cheeks and a happy smiling face.
