A Japanese lacquered wooden figure of Shotoku Taishi

Edo Period
The young prince modelled standing, dressed in intricately detailed polychrome robes, holding a gilded long handled incense censer in his hands. 31.5cm high, signed to base (small repair to base).

Footnotes

Prince Shotoku Taishi (AD 574-622) was Crown Prince and Regent to the Empress Suiko from 593. He became an important political and cultural leader and is regarded as the founder of Buddhism in Japan.
