A Japanese ivory letter opener

Meiji Period
In the form of a carved sword, the handle carved with various animals and birds, including a frog, monkey, rat, eagle and a squirrel, the slightly curved blade decorated in raised gilt and coloured enamels with birds and insects amidst flowering lotus and maple branches, 36cm long, together with a further ivory letter opener inlaid with mother-of-pearl with various insects, 28cm long (some losses), together with a boxwood simulated tanto of slightly curved form, 46cm long.
