A Japanese metallic 'trench art' vase

20th Century
The cylindrical vase with 'squashed' rim, the black ground detailed in gilt with Japanese characters, 25cm high, impressed numbers to the base, 75mm M5AI TYPE 1, dated 1961.

Footnotes

Trench art, decorative artwork made by soldiers during conflict, began during the Spanish-American War and the Boer War when projectiles with brass casings replaced cannon balls and other artillery ammunition, and has continued to be created by soldiers to the present day. Amongst the most common decorated pieces are spent shell cases. However, it is unlikely that this shell case was ever used in conflict as Japan has been forbidden by its own Constitution to have a standing army or wage war since the 1950s.
