Footnotes
The full-rigged merchantman ‘Seringapatam’ was built in the Marquis yard at Quebec in 1875. Owned by W.H. Ross & Co. of Liverpool, she was registered at 1,154 tons gross (1,128 net) and measured 199 feet in length with a 38 foot beam. After thirteen years under the ‘red ensign’, she was sold to Norwegian owners in 1888, cut down to a barque to save on crewing costs and renamed ‘Seringa’. Her new owners then employed her for twenty years until she was reportedly ‘condemned’ in 1908 and broken up.
