Footnotes
Despite the plethora of vessels named ‘Minerva’ listed in Lloyd’s Registers of Shipping at the turn of the eighteenth/nineteenth centuries, only two are noted as full-rigged ships built in 1791. Since one of these traded out of Bristol, the vessel depicted here is almost certainly the ‘Minerva’ of London owned by Mr. Montague. Built on the Thames and registered at 257 tons, she was engaged in the lucrative Jamaica trade and is probably shown here upon her safe return from a successful maiden voyage.
In the main aspect of this composition, Luny has shown the vessel hove-to and ready to receive the pilot, in the other seen heading up-Channel for London.
