Charles Boit (Swedish, 1663-1727)

George I (1660-1727), wearing ermine-trimmed red cloak and ribbon of the Order of the Garter over armour, with long curled wig.
Watercolour on vellum, signed on the reverse with initials and dated CB/ 1719, gilt border, wood frame indistinctly inscribed on reverse King George/ Gerard.

Shortly after his arrival in England in 1687, Boit became court enameller to William III. From 1703, he received commissions from Prince George of Denmark, husband of Queen Anne. In 1714, Boit ran into debt and fled to France where he continued to enjoy a successful patronage, from the Regent Duke of Orleans. Between 1719-20, the date of the present lot, he was spending some time in Dresden. By the end of his life he was again in debt and died in poverty in Paris
