Footnotes

There are a number of so-called 'bluecoat' schools in England, their name deriving from the sixteenth-century style costumes formerly worn by the pupils. Nowadays most of the schools are 'bluecoat' in name only, having long since abandoned the cassock-like bluecoats, knee breeches and stockings in favour of a more up to date uniform. However, several still retain their distinctive blue coats for special occasions and pupils at the most famous bluecoat school of all, Christ's Hospital in London, wear Elizabethan dress at all times.
