Footnotes
One of Europe's most prominent princely families, the Furstenbergs derived their name from the fortified town of the line's founder, Count Heinrich von Fürstenberg. Numerous members of the family have risen to positions of influence within Germany over the last four centuries. The present sitter, Prince Karl Egon (1796-1854), married Amalie Christine Karoline, Princess of Baden, in 1818, having previously been deposed through the annexation of his principality by his future father-in-law, the Grand Duke of Baden, in 1806.
