When Damas was young, his family emigrated to Russia. At the age of fifteen he joined the Tsar's army with whom he fought against Napoleon. He returned to France to pursue a political career with the aid of the Duke of Richelieu, whom he had met in Russia. He became Minister of War in 1823 and the following year replaced François-René de Chateaubriand as Foreign Minister. In 1828, he became tutor to the Duke of Bordeaux, the future "Henri V". After the Revolution of July 1830, he followed the family of Charles X into exile. He returned to France in 1833, and retired to Hautefort where he wrote his memoirs. From his marriage in 1822 to Charlotte Laure de Hautefort (1799-1847), he had nine sons and one daughter.

The present lot is based on a portrait by Jean-Baptiste Isabey originally in the collections of Mme. M. Wey-Isabey and Mme. H. A. Rolle. This prototype is now in the collection of the Louvre, Paris (see Pierrette Jean-Richard, Miniatures sur Ivoire, Musée du Louvre et Musée d'Orsay, 1994, p.204, ill. no.371). There exist a number of variants of this portrait, including one from the Ullmann Collection, sold Sotheby's, Zurich, 15 November 1977, lot 85; another, sold Sotheby's, London, 9 November 1986, lot 6; and one in the Musée de Caen.
