Footnotes
Allegories incorporating symbols of Hope, Abundance and Justice are often used to represent the heir to a throne. Ferdinand of Hapsburg, first son of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II (later Francis I, Emperor of Austria) acceded in 1835 upon the death of his father. He abdicated in 1848 during a year of revolutionary upheaval across the Continent.
Before leaving for Russia in 1796, Stroely painted many members of the Imperial Hapsburg family, including another portrait of Ferdinand, dated 1796, which is now in the Chancellery, Vienna.
