Footnotes

Conan Hopton was the son of the Reverend John Hopton of Canon House Court. He is first noted in the Army List of 1835 as an Ensign at the depot of the 20th East Devon Regiment. Moving to India under Captain Richard Fry, and accompanied by Ensign Vesey Berdmore and a draft of ninety men from Chatham, Hopton arrived at Fort St. George, Calcutta, in October of that same year. Seeing service in Burma and Madras with his regiment, the 63rd West Suffolk, and promoted to the rank of lieutenant in November 1837, he was killed by an accidental gunshot wound on 8 September, 1838.
