Nathaniel Richard Clarke was the son of Nathaniel Gooding Clarke of Handsworth, Staffordshire, and a Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge. His chief occupation was that of Serjeant-at-Law in the Middle Temple but he also served as Recorder for Lincoln, Northampton, Newark and Walsall and Lieutenant Colonel of the Warwickshire local militia.
Clarke married Anna Maria Garnett in 1814 and had six children.
