Provenance: By repute, removed from the Crystal Palace at Sydenham where the piece was apparently situated with a companion fountain as a pair near of the main entrances when the structure was moved from Hyde Park in 1854. The piece was acquired some time after the fire in 1936 and was given to the present vendor in the early 1980s.
