Yarborough rowed in the Boat Race for Oxford twice; beating Cambridge by six lengths in 1868 and two lengths in 1869, both at number 6. In the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley in 1869 and 1870, he rowed at no.6 for Oxford Etonians, beating London Rowing Club both times, and in the Stewards in 1870, also for Oxford Etonians.
Alfred Cooke Yarborough was educated at Eton and Lincoln College, Oxford where he rowed in the fours, pairs and sculls. At Henley royal Regatta he was also in the final of the Diamond Sculls twice (1869 & 1870). He rowed in the Oxford versus Harvard race in 1869, the first International race to create general public interest. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1871, becoming a timber exporter and farmer. He died in 1925.
