Leather covered body, with inset celluloid panel covering a printed plate of the 1827 signal code. Removable cap to object lens and sliding dust cover on eyepiece. Inscribed on the draw tube "Francis Heath, the gift of Rear Admiral Gambier" 24in(61cm)long.

Watkins & Hill were operating at Charing Cross between 1822 and 1856.
James Gambier, 1st Baron Gambier (1795-1833) Appointed Rear Admiral in 1795, he was present at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. Made Admiral of the Fleet in 1830 on the accession of William lV, his last naval appointment was negotiating the Treaty with the American States at Ghent in 1814.
