Footnotes

Provenance: with Richard Green; private collection, UK.

Born in Amsterdam at the end of the 18th century, Arnoldus Bloemers became well known for his still life compositions featuring flowers, fruit and dead game. He studied under Antoine Piera and was a member of The Royal Academy in Amsterdam. Bloemers came from a rich Dutch tradition of still life painting, embodied particularly in the work of Jan van Huysum (1682-1749) and Jan Van Os (1744-1808) who were renowned for their opulent arrangements of massed flowers.
This fine example of his work combines traditional floral elements such as roses, peonies, poppies and cornflowers with more exotic blooms such as rhododendrons.
This relative newcomer is an unusual addition to compositions of this period and would have proved popular with the artist's patrons.
The composition is faithful to the Dutch Masters, with the flowers set in an urn upon a ledge, even the signature is carefully placed. The palette however is brighter and in some ways the composition is more restrained.
Bloemers died in 1844 and is today regarded as one of the finest flower painters of his generation.
