An English Rapier
Circa 1640

With slender tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section, the forte cut with three deep fullers along both sides, each decoratively pierced and incised with an indistinct inscription beyond, iron hilt comprising shallow cup-guard pierced and chiselled in bas relief with four panels of symmetrical scrollwork with monster-head terminals and each centred on a portrait bust, demi-figures between, an outer side-ring above on each side chiselled with lines and a central portrait medallion, quillons and knuckle-guard en suite, the latter screwed to the pommel (screw incomplete) and linked to the side-rings by scrolled bars chiselled with foliage, globular pommel chiselled en suite with the guard, and wooden grip bound with twisted brass wire of varying degrees of thickness (some wear and pitting overall)
