An English Rapier
Circa 1640

With tapering double-edged blade with central fuller along each side of the forte incised with indistinct inscription, iron hilt comprising cup-guard and decorated overall with pierced and chiselled symmetrical foliage inhabited by pairs of monster-heads centred on portrait medallions probably representing Charles I and Henrietta, the upper edge of the cup-guard with two winged cherub's heads on one side, and two bowls of fruit on the other, downcurved quillons, chiselled quillon-block, scrolled rear quillon with monster-head terminal, knuckle-guard with central cartouche chiselled with a portrait bust on each side and screwed to the pommel, compressed globular pommel chiselled en suite with the guard, button finial, and later wooden grip (worn and pitted overall, particularly the blade)
