An English 'Mortuary' Hilted Broadsword
Mid-17th Century

With broad tapering double-edged blade incised with the name 'Dudley' along one side of the forte, and with faint traces of the same(?) name along the other, iron hilt comprising solid guard charmingly chiselled with conventional foliage involving four bearded human masks with punched cheeks, slender knuckle-guard connected to two chiselled side-bars by double scrolled bars and screwed to the globular pommel, the latter chiselled with foliage, a further diagonal to the rear of each side-bar joining the scrolled wrist-guard, and wooden grip bound with old leather thongs (some pitting overall)
