An English Hunting Hanger
Mid-17th Century

With curved blade double-edged towards the point and with two narrow fullers over nearly its entire length along the back-edge on each side, the forte incised with running wolf mark on each side between the spurious repeated date '1553', iron hilt punched and engraved with running foliage and, unusually, close-plated with silver, comprising vertically recurved drop-shaped quillons springing from a flat central block with two scroll-shaped projections (incomplete) on one side, cap-shaped pommel with flanged top and flat button, and natural buckhorn grip (minor split) with central and basal moulded iron ferrules (some wear and rust patination overall)
