An English Hanger
Mid-17th Century

With curved fullered blade widening towards the double-edged point and ornamentally waved along the back, long ricasso struck on each side with a maker's mark, a crowned recumbent stag(?), the forte on each side retaining traces of etching and with recessed panel with pierced keyhole slots and small circles, iron hilt comprising downbent trilobed shell retaining traces of gilding on the inside, downcurved inverted urn-shaped rear quillon, flat tapering knuckle-guard with urn-shaped centre, deep waisted pommel-cap with beaked heart-shaped top, button finial, and natural buckhorn grip with iron ferrules, the central one moulded, linked by recessed longitudinal straps, the iron parts encrusted overall with trellis and dot patterns (some wear and rust patination overall)
