A Left-Hand Dagger
Late 16th/Early 17th Century, Probably German, Italian Or English

With tapering double-edged blade with double central fuller forming a medial ridge along each side, recessed rectangular ricasso incised on one face with a circular mark incorporating the signature 'Fredero Picini' (sic), the iron hilt comprising straight quillons swelling towards the rounded tips, small side-ring, and globular pommel with small button, decorated overall with encrusted silver scrollwork involving pellets and rosettes, and with later reeded swelling horn grip with scalloped white-metal ferrules (one broken, some wear and rust patination overall)
24 cm. blade

Footnotes

The mark on the ricasso purports to be that of the famous late 16th Century Milanese swordsmith Frederico Piccininino. His blades, however, normally bear two similar marks bearing respectively his Christian name and surname in full. See A.V.B. Norman, Wallace Collection Catalogues European Arms And Armour Supplement, 1986, p. 147, A646
