London Silver Hallmarks For 1690, Maker's Mark Possibly Of Henry Hurst
With slightly curved Dutch blade double-edged towards the point and with central fuller and narrow fuller along the back-edge over two-thirds of its length on each side, the fuller etched and gilt on each side against a blued ground (some loss of blueing) with an orange tree in a pot over a foliated cartouche inscribed 'Vivat P.V.O' (Long Live the Prince of Orange), the forte on each side etched and gilt with an oval panel against foliated strapwork containing the crowned arms of a Prince of Orange above 'Jacobus Coenrads Mr. Zwaardfeger' (Jacob Coenrads Master Swordsmith) on one side, and 'Aghter de Beurs Tot Amsterdam' (Behind the Exchange at Amsterdam) on the other, hilt comprising recurved quillons with monster-head terminals, and tapering ivory grip of circular section with turned spherical pommel surmounted by a circular silver cap, and inlaid overall with silver foliage and pointillé fruit coloured in pigments of red and green, in later wood-lined leather scabbard (some damage) with silver locket and chape
